CBU Opens Up Home Schedule with Contests against #3 USC and #17 SJSU

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo opened up its home weekend with a pair of ranked matchups featuring #3 USC and #17 San Jose State. CBU would come up short in both matchups to bring their record to 1-5 to begin the season, with all five losses coming to ranked opponents.

GAME 1 vs #3 USC:

The third-ranked Trojans came into the match unbeaten and would stay that way with a dominant 20-2 victory over the Lancers in the opening match of the day for CBU. USC put the first goal on the board within the first minute but was immediately answered by the Lancers as Dora Lehoczky found the back of the net on the power play to even the score.

The Trojans never looked back after the score was tied and would take an 8-1 lead into halftime. Amelia Urry, in goal, had a handful of highlight-worthy saves against the powerhouse Trojans and would record six saves in total in 24 minutes of work between the posts. CBU's only other goal would come in the third period, but the Trojan's prolific offense proved to be too much and would ride out the 20-2 victory to start their season 3-0.

GAME 2 vs SAN JOSE ST.:

The second match of the day was a much more competitive 32 minutes of water polo as the #17 San Jose State Spartans visited Riverside for a 4:30 match. The Spartans dominated the opening frame, putting up three goals on the board and holding the Lancer offense scoreless through eight minutes in the pool. Emily Lopez and Celeste Almendariz would each connect on a goal in the early going of the second period to bring the Lancers within one. However, the Spartans would also dent the twine twice in the period and hold on to their three-point lead heading into halftime.

CBU would score a pair of goals in the third period, but San Jose's offense continued to press and would offset those goals with two of their own. The Spartans would dominate the final frame 4-2 and hold on for the 11-6 final result.

NEXT: The Lancers will return to the Lancer Aquatics Center for Day 2 of The Joust with a pair of games against Redlands and La Verne at 8 AM and 4:30 PM, respectively.
