RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University closed The Joust Tournament in dominant fashion with a pair of wins over Redlands and La Verne on Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
CBU set the single-game program record in the morning match against Redlands by putting up 28 goals and then nearly topped that figure by besting the La Verne Leopards 27-10 in the night game. The wins move to CBU to 3-5 on the young season and evens up their home opening weekend record at 2-2.
GAME 1 vs REDLANDS:
The Lancers came out on fire against the Bulldogs in the 8 AM match, knocking through a season-high nine goals in the opening frame compared to two for Redlands. Aubrey Newton and Delilah Moreno each scored two in the first period as the Lancer offense was humming along. The second period was not much different from the first as CBU poured in seven more goals, including the first career goals from Morgan Vice and Bailey Rosa. The two freshmen each scored put two in the back of the net in the second period alone as they made their collegiate debuts.
CBU's second-half defense was even more suffocating than the first, as it would only allow Redlands to convert one goal in the entirety of the 16 minutes. The Lancers would continue its offensive assault, and two late goals from Vice and Briana Livingston would give CBU the single-game program record of 28 goals as they would go on to win by the final score of 28-5. Reese Beringer, Vice, and Jadyn Hepler would all register hat tricks in the historic win, with Hepler being the team leader in points with seven by chipping in four assists as well. Between the posts, Amelia Urry and Aleksandra Antanasijevic split time and would combine for eight saves with just five goals allowed.
GAME 2 vs LA VERNE:
The final game of CBU's home tournament was a similarly dominant showing from the host squad as they would come within one of the single-game program they set just a few hours earlier in the day. The Lancers would score 27 goals in this matchup as they dominated from start to finish over the La Verne Leopards.
La Verne kept pace early, with the Lancers keeping within arm's length of the Lancers through the first five minutes of the opening period. CBU would begin to pull away over the final few minutes of the frame behind Emaly Hutton, denting the twine on consecutive possessions and leading a 3-0 CBU run. The second period was CBU's most impressive of the match as they would outscore the Leopards 8-1 to take a 15-4 lead into halftime. After halftime, CBU's depth flexed its muscles, with eight different Lancers finding the back of the net in the second half, and the home team would round out the day with a 17-point victory.
Rosa was the team leader in the game, scoring three goals on four shots and adding an assist to boot. Seven other Lancers would score multiple goals and there would be 18 different players with a tally on the evening. True Freshman goalkeeper Antanasijevic got the nod at the keeper and would record two steals, two saves, and an assist in the full 32 minutes of action. Celeste Almendariz would also cross a significant career milestone in the victory, scoring her 100th career goal in the second period.
NEXT: The Lancers will be back in action next week as they head down to La Jolla, CA, to compete in the Triton Invitational from Friday, January 31 to February 2.
