CBU Drops Triton Invitational Opener to #6 UC Irvine

LA JOLLA, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo opened up the Triton Invitational on Friday afternoon as they took on the #6 UCI Anteaters at Triton Pool in La Jolla, CA. CBU kept pace early with the top-10 squad but would eventually fall 22-10. The loss drops the #22 Lancers to 3-6 to begin the season and gives UCI its third win in four games.

The opening period was a hectic array of penalties and exclusions between the two ranked squads, with both teams scoring multiple goals off of five-meter penalties and on powerplays. UCI had the early 3-1 lead, but CBU scored five of the next seven to take a 6-5 lead. The Anteaters would find the back of the net in the final seconds to make the score even at six heading into the second period. UCI would dominate the second period, scoring six more goals and not allowing the Lancers to find their mark.

CBU would have life in the third period with a trio of goals, but the damage from the second period was too severe as the #6 Anteaters would go on to win 22-10. Kyra Kahahawai led the way with another hat trick, scoring three goals, while her teammates Celeste Almendariz and Emaly Hutton followed closely behind with two goals each.

NEXT: The Lancers will compete tomorrow at 9:50 AM against the loser of San Diego State and Long Beach State and will play a second game against an undetermined opponent on day two of the Triton Invitational.
