LA JOLLA, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo split day two of the Triton Invitational on Saturday afternoon as they battled #18 San Diego State and #7 Arizona State at the Triton Pool.
CBU avenged an early season loss to the Aztecs in the first game of the day and would drop the second game to the Sun Devils to bring their record to 4-7 on the young season.
GAME 1 vs SDSU:
The first game of the day featured a familiar opponent: the San Diego State Aztecs. The game marked the fifth meeting between these two programs in just the past two seasons, and the win for the Lancers was their first over the Aztecs since 2001. The win was also CBU's first ranked win of the season and their first since they defeated #22 CSUN at home last season.
SDSU had early momentum, scoring three quick goals on the Lancers while only netting one themselves via Dora Lehoczky. Reese Beringer would add one more to the Lancer total off a powerplay, but CBU would trail 2-4 after eight minutes in the pool. The second period was a momentum shifter for the Lancers as their defense played nearly flawlessly. CBU put five goals on the scoreboard in the period, including three off of powerplays to give themselves a 7-4 lead. The Aztecs would squeeze one in before time expired to cut the deficit to two as the Lancers led 7-5 at the break.
The third period was a back-and-forth battle, but the CBU still managed to cling to a two-goal lead as the two teams headed to the fourth period. In the fourth period, CBU had an answer for every SDSU goal, and Morgan Gates would put the dagger away at 47 seconds to help the Lancers upset the Aztecs 14-11. The combination of Emaly Hutton and Kyra Kahahawai was lethal for the Lancers, combining for seven goals in the victory. Kahahawai scored four, while Hutton contributed a hat trick with a trio of goals. Lehoczky was also a key contributor to the victory, with a pair of goals and assists.
GAME 2 vs ASU:
The second match of the day was also a rematch of an early season game as the #7 Sun Devils and #22 Lancers squared off for the second time in two weeks.
The highly-ranked Sun Devils came out with purpose, netting six goals in the opening frame compared to just two scored by Lehoczky for the Lancers. ASU did not let up in the second period and would take a 10-4 lead into halftime. Niya Bumbaca would end the bleeding with a southpaw strike into the back of the net to begin the third period, but ASU would dent the twine five straight times to all but wrap up their victory. Delilah Moreno and Kahahawai would both score goals in the fourth period, but it would not be enough as ASU would win 18-7 to continue its terrific start to the season.
NEXT: The Lancers will conclude the Triton Invitational tomorrow against #11 LMU at 11:40 AM.
