CBU moves to 8-7-1 overall on the season. Their WAC record now sits at 4-2-0.
"We demonstrated great heart and class in how we competed tonight. First half, we out possessed our opponent and controlled their opportunities with good ball pressure and shape. Second half, we started quickly getting on the board in the first few minutes with a fantastic combination play between Anya and Ava for the goal," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We were the better team for 87 minutes tonight, controlling play on both sides of the ball. Disappointing for both goals to come off questionable set piece calls but we can't control that. What we can control is being sharper with our opportunities in 18 yd the box. We had scoring opportunities to go 3-0 before their first goal. Mikayla came up with multiple saves including an incredible penalty kick save".
Goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien faced an onslaught from the Utah Valley attack as the Wolverines registered ten attempts on frame. O'Brien made the save on eight of those chances, placing her one save shy of her season high.Five of O'Brien's saves came in the first half, as both teams could not find the back of the net, sending the match into halftime with zeroes across the board.
The Lancers erased one of the zeroes and tacked a one on the board just 66 seconds into the second half as Ava Westlund provided a goal-of-the-year candidate play. Set up from a pass by Anja Jestrovic, Westlund connected with her left foot, sending the ball to the back post where it clanked off the iron and ricocheted into the goal.
Westlund's goal was her seventh of the season.
The Wolverines looked to have an answer for the Lancers in the 71st minute when they were awarded a penalty. Maire Quentel stepped up to take the penalty, but she was denied by the post, keeping the match level.
Five minutes later, the equalizer came when Quentel cashed in off a Tylie Miller assist. The Wolverines were not finished as they scored again less than a minute later when a cross from Mia Owens found Ruby Hladek to give UVU the 2-1 advantage.
CBU registered nine shots on Saturday, with only three finishing on frame. Goalkeeper Leah Wolf finished the night with two saves.
With the victory, Utah Valley kept its lead in the WAC as its record moved to 5-0-1.
"This is a tough one as we know 3 points slipped through our grasp, but we know we're getting better each game. If we continue to focus on our preparation, execution and performance one game at a time, we'll earn another opportunity. We need to put this game behind us and turn our attention to our next opponent as we continue in the second half of WAC conference play. Ultimately positioning, ourselves to compete for the WAC Tournament Championship," finished St. Clair.
The Lancers will be back in action on Thursday night as Utah Tech comes to Riverside. CBU beat Utah Tech 2-0 in their earlier meeting. Tickets for the 7 p.m. match are on sale HERE.
