RIVERSIDE --- The final non-conference installment of the Crosstown Showdown hit the floor on Tuesday, as the Lancers welcomed their inner-city rivals of UC Riverside to the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. It was all Lancers from the word go, as CBU picked up its fourth win in a row behind an 80-57 finish.
CBU is 4-0 to start the season, continuing its best opening stretch since 2021.
Head coach Rick Croy spoke on the importance of beating his crosstown rival, noting, "We're CBU. You have to live here. Riverside is important to us. We've been in this community. We love this community; we pour in, and they give us a lot back. Look at these crowds we've had. Our guys appreciate it, and we don't take it for granted. It's really special."
Croy also spoke about the pride his team took in winning Tuesday night, adding, "We're a very together group, and our guys show up to work every day. When you do that, over time, you grow a lot of pride in the product. That's coming from our guys. In this day and age, in this era of college basketball, if it's coming from your guys, you have a good chance. Make no mistake about it, we are player-driven. We have a lot of good people in our locker room."
UCR netted the first basket of Tuesday's game, and after CBU leveled the score, UCR grabbed the lead back on a layup. That 4-2 lead is noteworthy because it was the final lead of the night for the Highlanders, as CBU responded with an 18-0 run to blow the game open.
The Lancers scored a season-high 49 points in the opening half, with guards Dominique Daniels Jr. and Martel Williams both dropping a dozen.
Devon Malcolm scored six in the first half, with two coming off a highlight reel dunk over a UCR defender.
CBU kept up the pressure in the second half, with Daniels Jr. adding 13 more to his stat line. The Lancers never relinquished their lead in the closing 20 minutes, with 18 of their 31 second-half points coming down low in the paint.
The Lancers concluded the Crosstown Showdown victory with five players finishing in double-figures. Daniels Jr. led the group with 25 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 showing at the charity stripe. Daniels Jr. remains perfect on free-throw attempts through four games.
Williams and Jayden Jackson concluded the game with 12 points each, followed by Malcolm and Jonathan Griman, who both added ten.
"We have a lot of guys that can impact this team," added Croy. "When you step on the floor, when you are on the bench, you have to be focused on what your job is to help the team. If you do that, and you commit to that, our collective focus will improve, and we won't self-inflict as much."
The Lancers pulled down 50 boards for the second game in a row and outrebounded the Highlanders by 12. Thomas Ndong led the way with nine, followed by Malcolm, who pulled down eight. Griman contributed seven.
UCR was led by Marqui Worthy, who scored 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
The Lancers will be back in action on Friday when Grambling State comes to Riverside. This meeting with the Tigers will be the first in program history, and it will also be Salute to Service Night, with all branches of the U. S. Armed Forces being honored. Tickets are on sale HERE.
After Friday night, the Lancers will hit the road for five straight away from Riverside.
