CBU Falls in Offensive Shootout to SDSU on Friday Afternoon

SAN DIEGO, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo opened up Gold Coast Conference action on Friday afternoon as they battled the San Diego State Aztecs for the third time this season. The home team would hold serve in this matchup, outscoring CBU 22-14 en route to the victory.
CBU falls to 6-9 on the season with the defeat, while the Aztecs improve to 6-5 on the season and remain perfect at the Aztec Aquaplex.
The offensive fireworks started early for both teams, as they would combine for eight goals in the opening six minutes. The Aztecs would tack on one more goal to end the first period as they led 5-4 after eight minutes of action. San Diego State would exert its will in the second frame as they would begin the period with six straight goals while not allowing any to find their mark for the Lancers. CBU would prevent the match from getting out of hand with a pair of goals from Delilah Moreno finding the back of the net and another coming from Aubrey Newton to make the score 12-7 heading into halftime.
Dora Lehoczky would score two early goals in the third period for the Lancers to bring CBU within three of the Aztecs as they attempted to mount a comeback. SDSU would halt the momentum by scoring three of the next four goals to distance themselves from the Lancers. SDSU would go on to pull out the conference victory 22-14 to remain perfect at home.
Moreno put together the best performance of her season thus far with four goals on six shots, while Lehoczky registered another hat trick with three goals on six shots.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home for an exhibition match against the Toronto Golden Jets on Saturday, February 15, at 11 AM.
