CAMBRIDGE, MA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo split the opening day of the Harvard Invite on Saturday morning as they fell to host #8 Harvard and dominated Siena. The split gives CBU an 8-10 record on the season, with all of their losses coming via ranked opponents.
GAME 1 vs HARVARD:
CBU opened the day by battling the host of the tournament, the Harvard Crimson. Harvard is in the midst of one of their best season in recent program history as they are on a ten-match winning streak and coming off a 14-3 dismantling of #16 Michigan last week.
The game opened in Harvard's favor as the Crimson quickly put up three quick goals on the scoreboard to force Head Coach Julie Snodgrass to burn an early timeout in the first period. The timeout worked to CBU's advantage as the Lancers would score on a penalty shot, and a Cayleigh Carter goal would bring the Lancers within one of the Crimson. The one from Carter was a special one as it marked her 100th career goal and was one of two goals scored by the graduate student in the match.
The Crimson did not let the game get any closer from that point forward and would put three of the next four goals through the back of the net to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. The Lancers continued to compete hard but could not gain any ground on the #8 Crimson as Harvard would continue to keep the road team at bay. Harvard would continue their hot streak with the 16-9 victory at Blodgett Pool. Dora Lehoczky and Carter would be the two Lancers to secure multiple goals, with Lehoczky registering the hat trick. Lehoczky would connect on all three of her shots and would add an assist to lead the team with four points.
GAME 2 vs SIENA:
CBU opened up game two of the Harvard Invite against the Siena Saints with a sense of purpose, as they would find the back of the net seven times in the opening eight minutes. Half of those goals would come from the arm of Grace Bergquist, who would earn a new career-high in the opening frame and help CBU jump out to a 7-4 advantage. CBU's defense showed off in the second period as they suffocated the Siena offense, not allowing them to score a single goal while putting two of their own on the scoreboard.
CBU likewise did not allow a goal in the third period and threw the proverbial knockout punch with seven more goals in the third frame. CBU had six different goal scorers in the frame as they would take the commanding 16-3 lead into the final period. CBU would find the target three more times in the fourth quarter, while Siena found it just once as the Lancers dominated the matinee matchup 19-4.
Bergquist's career-best performance was accompanied by a terrific match from junior Emaly Hutton who would score five goals on six attempts and dished out two assists for a seven-point afternoon. Kyra Kahahawai and Madison Haworth would both find the back of the net on multiple occasions, as CBU would have ten different players dent the twine at Blodgett Pool.
NEXT: CBU will be back at Blodgett Pool tomorrow to take on #16 Wagner and Mercyhurst for Day Two of the Harvard Invitational beginning at 5:30 AM PT.
