RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team went undefeated on Saturday afternoon, besting #19 Cal State Northridge and Chapman at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
The win moved CBU's record to 6-8 overall and gave the Lancers their second-ranked win of the season in their 15-13 thriller over #19 CSUN in the first match of the day.
GAME #1 vs #19 CSUN:
The Lancers defeated a ranked CSUN squad at home for the second consecutive season after defeating the Matadors 17-10 a season ago. The first period was all Matadors, with the Big West squad netting four goals in the first four minutes to force Julie Snodgrass to huddle up her squad. Out of the timeout, Dora Lehoczky registered her first goal of the morning to give the Lancers some momentum heading into the second period. The second period was one to remember for CBU as they would put on an offensive clinic that resulted in seven goals to give them a 9-7 lead at halftime.
CSUN managed to outscore CBU in the third period to bring themselves within one goal of each other heading into the crucial final eight minutes. The fourth period was a defensive battle, with the two teams combining to score three goals in the eight-minute span of the frame. Niya Bumbaca and Kyra Kahahawai sealed the Matador's fate with two early goals that CSUN never recovered from as the Lancers went on to win 15-13. Four different Lancers earned hat tricks in the thrilling victory, including Cayleigh Carter, Kahahawai, Lehoczky, and Celeste Almendariz.
GAME #2 vs Chapman:
The second match of the day for the Lancers was a matchup against Chapman University. The Panthers scored first, but that momentum would be short-lived as the Lancers fired off six straight goals to close the first period and begin the second period to take complete control of the match. Chapman would add only one other goal in the second period as the Lancers were rolling to a 9-2 halftime advantage.
The second produced much of the same result as the Lancers would outscore the Panthers 12-6 in the second half en route to the 21-8 victory. The 21 goals marked the third time this season that CBU has surpassed the 20+ goal barrier, doing so against Redlands and La Verne earlier in the season. Almendariz added her second hat trick of the day in this game, scoring three goals on five shots. In her first game of the season, Amber Nielsen also registered a hat trick, converting all three of her shot attempts and adding an assist to her tally to boot. In goal, all three rostered keepers saw action, with Tyanna Schneider leading the way with five saves in 16 minutes of work in the cage.
