RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo clashed with its fifth top-ten-ranked opponent of the season on Saturday afternoon as they face #6 Fresno State for a conference clash.
CBU hung around early in the game but would ultimately succumb to the Bulldog's suffocating defense and would come up short by a final score of 15-6. The loss drops the Lancers to 9-13 and 0-2 in Gold Coast Conference play. Fresno State improves to 3-0 in conference action and 9-6 overall.
The #6 Bulldogs threw the first punch of the game as they scored three early goals, while CBU would only find the back of the net once. CBU's defense would tighten up, leading to a perfectly placed ball by Tyanna Schneider that found Dora Lehoczky, who would score in stride to cut the deficit to a single goal late in the first period. Fresno State would retake the advantage with a 3-0 run that would be ended by Kyra Kahahawai on a powerplay. Kahahawai would score again a few seconds later as CBU continued to hang around. The Bulldogs would end the half with the final two goals, including one with just three seconds on the clock after an untimely turnover from the Lancers on their side of the pool.
The third period was a defensive struggle that was won by the visiting team as they would hold CBU scoreless in the frame while putting two more on the board. The Lancers would score the opening two goals of the fourth period, with Lehoczky and Emaly Hutton each finding the back of the net. Fresno State would squash any hope of a comeback by scoring the final four goals of the period and would wind up with the 15-6 victory.
Schneider put together a phenomenal effort in between the posts for the Lancers, as she would record 15 saves in 32 minutes of action. For Schneider, it was the second most saves in a single game in her career and was just a few of her record-setting 18 saves that she posted against Indiana last season. Lehoczky and Kahahawai led the offensive effort with two goals apiece, while Celeste Almendariz and Hutton would tack on the final two goals on the scoresheet.
NEXT: CBU will hit the road next week as they take on the Concordia University Irvine Eagles on Friday, March 21, at 6 PM PT.
