CBU's Comeback Attempt Comes up Short vs Pacific

RIVERSIDE-- The California Baptist University women's water polo team opened up the home portion of their Gold Coast Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of Pacific 13-11. The Lancers drop to 0-2 in early conference action and 9-12 overall following the loss.

The Tigers made a statement early at the Lancer Aquatics Center, driving four shots into the back of the net in the opening five minutes of the match. Julie Snodgrass would huddle her team up to regroup and refocus her squad. Grace Bergquist would halt the bleeding with a goal, but a pair of Pacific goals would quickly supplant that to take a commanding 6-1 lead after the first period. Dora Lehoczky would find the second of the day for the Lancers in the early second period, leading to a 3-1 CBU run to get themselves back in the ball game. The Tigers would tack on one more goal to double up the Lancers 8-4 heading into halftime.

CBU came out of the second-half gates as the aggressor, scoring three of the first four goals to bring energy back to the pool. Just as momentum seemed to flip, UOP would snag a late third-period goal to put CBU down by four goals heading into the final period. CBU flirted with a comeback attempt in the fourth but could never make up any real ground on the Tigers and would eventually succumb to the road team 13-11.

Lehoczky would add another hat trick to her resume, scoring three goals on six shots and would add in two assists for a five-point game for the graduate student. Devyn Ruffer, Bergquist, and Kyra Kahahawai would all submit multi-goal games for the Lancers. In between the posts, Tyanna Schneider registered five saves and a steal in a complete game.

NEXT: CBU will remain in Riverside to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday, March 15.
