SANTA CLARA, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo made it three conference wins in a row on Saturday afternoon as they bested the Santa Clara Broncos 12-8 at the Sullivan Aquatics Center.
CBU is now cemented into the fifth seed in the Gold Coast Conference standings after the victory and will face the San Diego State Aztecs in the opening round of the tournament in two weeks in Los Angeles.
CBU swung the momentum in its favor right out of the gate with five unanswered goals in four minutes to force the Broncos into a first-period timeout. The second period was a defensive battle, with Santa Clara finally finding their first goal of the match on a penalty shot with just under four minutes to play in the half. The Broncos would add in another one a few moments later, but that would be answered by a Grace Bergquist goal to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
CBU would further expand its lead at the top of the third period as Reese Beringer, Bumbaca, and Bergquist all found the back of the net. The Broncos would fight off the momentum a little bit with a quartet of scores in the period, but they would still trail 9-6 heading into the final frame. Santa Clara would score first to open the quarter and make it a two-goal game, but timely goals from Bumbaca and Kyra Kahahawai would seal the fate of the home team. The two teams would exchange goals down the stretch as the Lancers would come away with the 12-8 victory.
Bumbaca had one of the best games of her young career, with a pair of goals and a career-high five assists to lead the team in points at seven. Celeste Almendariz and Kahahawai would each contribute hat tricks in the victory, and they would both add assists to their totals. Tyanna Schneider was solid as usual between the posts, recording another double-digit save effort with 11 in the full 32 minutes of action.
NEXT: The Lancers will compete in their final GCC match of the season as they face the top-seeded LMU Lions in Los Angeles on Thursday, April 17, at 3 PM PT.
