CBU Drops Final GCC Contest to LMU

LOS ANGELES, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team closed its regular season on the road on Thursday afternoon against the Loyola Marymount Lions. CBU would drop the conference contest 20-5 and wrap up its conference schedule as the #5 seed in the standings.
The Lancers finish the season 12-14 and 3-4 in Gold Coast Conference action. CBU won three of the final four conference matches to earn the fifth seed for the second consecutive season under Head Coach Julie Snodgrass.
The top-seeded Lions wasted no time getting their offense going, as they would score on their opening two possessions with relative ease. CBU would answer the quick start with a goal from Celeste Almendariz on a power-play opportunity off a perfectly placed ball from reigning GCC Player of the Week Niya Bumbaca. CBU's offense struggled from that point forward as the Lions would put seven scores on the board in the opening period compared to just the one from the road team. The second period saw a much better defensive effort from the Lancers, as they would force multiple turnovers and come up with key stops. CBU would limit the Lions to just three goals in the period, but their offense could not get going, and they would trail at halftime 10-1.
CBU had its best offensive effort in the third period as they scored a trio of goals in the frame, however the Lions combatted that with five of their own to keep the margin in their favor. The Lions would score five more in the final period to earn the 20-5 victory, keep their perfect conference record intact, and claim the outright regular season title. No Lancer scored multiple goals in the match, but Dora Lehoczky would have multiple points for the 14th consecutive time this season with an assist and goal.
NEXT: CBU will prepare for the GCC Tournament next week as they will match up with San Diego State in the 4-5 matchup on Friday, April 25, in Los Angeles on the campus of LMU.
