ST. GEORGE, UTAH - For the first time this season, California Baptist softball has swept a three-game series, which couldn't have happened under better circumstances. The Lancers finished the series sweep on Saturday with a 14-3 run-rule victory, ultimately outscoring the Trailblazers 31-9 in the past two days. CBU is now 10-8 in Western Athletic Conference play, alone in third place in the standings with a one-game cushion between them and Seattle U.
The offense stepped up again in a big way, as they did on Friday. Kalena Burns kept her program streak alive by sending another ball over the fence, giving her a four-game home run streak, the longest in the NCAA era.
The true champion of today's game, though, was Ashlee Annett. The first baseman has stepped up in a huge way this year after posting a career batting average of .221, six runs, 12 RBI, and one home run during her freshman and sophomore campaigns; she is now boasting a team-best .378 average with 13 runs scored, 26 RBI, and five home runs, one of which kicked off CBU's scoring on Saturday. She ended the game with five RBI while going 3-3 with two doubles and a walk.
Priscilla Estrada and Kate Penberthy also had significant roles in Saturday's victory. The senior shortstop has been locked in for the past two weeks and has increased her average by nearly 50 points since game two of the UT Arlington series. Estrada went 2-4 today with three runs scored and two more brought in, but since the UTA series, she is averaging a team-high .536 at the plate with nine RBI. Penberthy also went 2-4 today with two runs scored but three RBI. Matti Severns has settled into the leadoff hole nicely, hitting .500 since April 11 with seven runs scored while collecting multiple hits in eight of the past 12 games.
The Lancers return home for their final regular season home series this week as Abilene Christian arrives for a three-game series starting Friday afternoon. Saturday will be Senior Day, so be sure to arrive early and plan to hang around afterward to take in the Senior Day ceremonies. Friday's doubleheader is set for 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. at Funk Stadium.
