CBU Falls to Highlanders Across Town

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program fell to crosstown rivals UC Riverside on Monday night in a midweek tilt 6-4. Despite the Lancers starting a comeback in the ninth, the Highlanders held on to sweep the season series and move CBU to 23-22 on the year.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lancers would strike first after capitalizing on a wild pitch from UCR to take a 1-0 lead. The Highlanders strung together a single and double in the bottom of the third to bring in three runs to gain the lead and would not come across home plate again until the sixth inning off a solo home run. The bottom of the seventh saw another two singles from the home squad score before Jacob Wilson shut down the UCR offense in the bottom of the eighth.

CBU's best offensive effort came in the top of the ninth, down by four runs. A leadoff double from Julian Alvarez posed a solid start, but the next two Lancers would go down in order for a pair of outs on the board. Chris Ramirez did what he does best and knocked a single into right field to score Alvarez before Ben Castelli battled at the plate for a walk. Nicholas Dumesnil picked up two RBI with a well-placed double to put CBU within two, but Ryan Kim ultimately went down on strikes to end the game.

The California Baptist offense was not lacking as the Lancers outhit UCR 11 to six, but five of the six runs for the Highlanders were free-passes. CBU totaled seven free-passes on the evening, while UCR gave up just three. Dumesnil, Ramirez, and Trevor Spainhoward snagged a two-hit game across town, while Andrew Rudd had a solid evening on the bump with six strikeouts and two hits allowed across 3.2 innings of work.

The Lancers finally return home this weekend as they welcome Tarleton to Totman Stadium for a Western Athletic Conference home series, starting Friday at 6 p.m.
