SEATTLE - California Baptist softball successfully returned to Western Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon with a monumental doubleheader sweep of league leaders Seattle U, 1-0 and 2-1, in Washington. The Lancers are the second team to shut out the Redhawks all season and the first to claim a series win over them at Logan Field in 2025. The wins push CBU back up the WAC standings into fifth place while SU falls out of first place for the first time this season.
GAME ONE: CBU 1 - SU 0
The series opener would get off to a slow offensive start, with the two teams recording just five hits through four complete innings. CBU would break the cycle in the top of the fifth inning by stringing together four solid at-bats, beginning with Mia Krueger's leadoff single up the middle. Malachy Russell-Millen would work a walk next, and Matti Severns would follow up with a bases-loading single to left field. Senior shortstop Priscilla Estrada would smack her eighth RBI of the season into center field, scoring pinch runner Laci Lopez for what would be the winning run.
Seattle would put a runner on second base in the bottom half of the same inning but would never threaten more than that in the final three innings. Lancer starter Annika Hollingsworth tossed an absolute gem in her third complete game of the season, the first shutout, striking out five Redhawks and allowing just three hits. She shined the brightest when the pressure was peaking, though, striking out two and handling a comeback grounder to end the game in the seventh.
GAME TWO: CBU 2 - SU1
CBU returned to the field 30 minutes later, ready to go, and took early control with two runs in the first inning. Matti Severns led off the game with a single to left and was brought home three batters later when first baseman Ashlee Annett smashed her fourth homer of the season. The Lancers would keep pushing and put a runner on third five more times during the second game but could not capitalize fully on the opportunity. The Redhawks would score their first and only run of the day in the bottom of the third inning when a hit-by-pitch would come back to haunt the Lancers to the tune of one run, but again, SU would not be able to finish their rally.
The Lancers got another incredible performance from their starter; this time, Lili Arana got the complete game win. Arana struck out two, walked just two, and worked through 10 Redhawks stranded on base. Arana is now 6-1 on the year with a staff-best 3.11 ERA in 56.1 innings.
CBU will look to complete its first-ever sweep of Seattle U tomorrow morning as the two teams meet for their series finale at 11:00 a.m. at Logan Field.
