Seattle Takes Saturdays Finale But The Lancers Take the Series

SEATTLE - California Baptist University softball closed out the weekend against Seattle U, who started the week as the top team in the Western Athletic Conference. Hoping to complete the sweep, the Lancers fell short of that goal, dropping game three by a score of 8-5. CBU won the series with a Friday doubleheader sweep, busting them out of a recent rutt and putting them back on track.

CBU picked up where they left off yesterday, plating three runs in the top of the first inning as Ashlee Annett and Sydney Soto each smacked RBI hits to secure an early lead for the Lancers. Things went a bit sideways after that for CBU as Seattle scored eight unanswered runs from the bottom of the first to the bottom of the fifth innings.

The Lancers would not roll over for Seattle, though, as they began cycling through pinch hitters to shake things up in the seventh. It worked to a degree. After Annett singled to lead off the inning, she was pinch run for by Alyssa Onyeagwa. She advanced to second on a ground out in the next at-bat, and then Makenna Dashiell came up to pinch-hit for Soto. Dashiell cranked her second pinch-hit home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 8-5. One more Lancer would get as far as second base, but no more as the game ended on a fly out to right field.

CBU will be back in Riverside for the next four games, starting with a huge matchup against No. 8/9 UCLA. The Bruins will be the first ranked opponent to visit Funk Stadium in the Division I era. They will bring with them a 36-5 record and boast an eight-game win streak after sweeping their most recent Big 10 series at Ohio State. That game sold out weeks ago, so fans without a ticket can still watch the game on ESPN+ at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
