RIVERSIDE--- It was Senior Day on Friday evening at the Lancer Aquatics Center as the Lancers battled Azusa Pacific in a hotly-contested Gold Coast Conference match that resulted in a 15-13 overtime win for the Lancers.
The overtime victory was the first for the Lancers since 2018 when they defeated #23 Fresno State in the GCC Tournament and just the third overtime match they have played at home since 2018. The win was the second of the conference schedule for CBU this season and moves their overall record to 11-13.
The visiting Cougars had all the momentum in the early going as they would put three of the first four goals of the match on the scoreboard. The Cougars would score consecutive goals to end the first period and begin the second period to open up their largest lead of the match at 5-2. Kyra Kahahawai would answer back with a goal seconds later that would open up a 5-0 run for the Lancers to end the half and give CBU a 7-5 halftime advantage.
The Cougars would rally to begin the second half with two quick goals to knot the match at seven apiece. The Lancers would respond with a 4-1 run to take an 11-8 run with 6:23 remaining in the fourth period to give CBU major momentum. The Cougars would stall that momentum with a furious, late-game rally that saw the visitors put three goals on the board in the final three minutes of action to send the game to extra time. In the first three-minute overtime period, CBU struck first off the hand of Celeste Almendariz but would be answered on the ensuing possession by an APU goal. Almendariz would score again at the 30-second mark to give the Lancers a one-goal advantage heading into the final three-minute period.
In the second overtime period, the Cougars would strike first thirty seconds into the frame, tying the match at 13 apiece. Emaly Hutton would pick the perfect time to score her first goal of the game as she would give CBU the go-ahead goal with 2:16 remaining. With 0:39 seconds on the clock, the Cougars would draw a five-meter penalty to set up a possible game-tying situation. Tyanna Schneider would come up with the clutch stop on the penalty shot, forcing the ball to clang the bar and keeping CBU in control of the game. Hutton would put the nail in the coffin seconds later with a southpaw shot from the middle of the pool to secure the victory 15-13 over the Cougars.
There were multiple crucial performances from the Lancers in this one, beginning with Grace Bergquist and Kahahawai, each posting hat tricks. Hutton came up clutch with two overtime goals to secure the victory and chipped in two assists to put her in a three-way tie for the points leader with four. Schneider was clutch with another double-digit save performance, tallying ten in between the posts and coming up with the critical penalty stop in overtime.
NEXT: The Lancers will finish the season on the road, beginning with a trip to Santa Clara on Saturday, April 12, at 1 PM.
