SAN DIEGO, CA--- The California Baptist baseball program headed south on Tuesday evening to take on San Diego State University for the second time this season, defeating the Aztecs 10-4. CBU improves its overall record to 18-15 while going 2-0 this season against SDSU.
Cameron Teper held down the mound well for the Lancers, allowing the offense to build momentum in the top of the second. A pair of doubles from Nicholas Dumesnil and Bubba Rocha would plate a pair of runs for the Lancers after Julian Alvarez got things rolling with an RBI single. Teper held the Aztecs to just two hits through 3.2 innings of work before Skipper Gary Adcock turned control over to Julian Orozco, who spun 1.1 innings with two punchouts and two hits. Alvarez came in clutch again during the top of the fifth with another RBI single before Ben Castelli earned an RBI in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.
The bottom of the sixth saw a breath of offense for the home squad after SDSU crossed home plate four times during the inning, primarily due to a bases-clearing triple. The Aztecs would threaten again in the bottom of the seventh with a runner in scoring position, but a pair of strikeouts from David Vizcaino kept the Lancer lead alive. CBU would ultimately tally four more runs in the eighth and ninth innings, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Chris Ramirez. Vizcaino returned to the mound to clean up the finale two innings, allowing just one hit and sitting down a total of five Aztecs during his time.
The Lancer bats were scorching on Tuesday in San Diego, knocking a total of 16 hits, with Castelli owning four across six at-bats. Five other Lancers had multiple hits during the midweek affair, while Alvarez led the squad with three RBI on the evening.
The midweek win comes at a good time for the Lancers after CBU plated a three-game skid over the weekend. The 10-4 win over the Aztecs will up the momentum heading into the non-conference affair this weekend against the University of the Pacific.
