RIVERSIDE--- Sunday afternoon at Totman Stadium saw the California Baptist baseball team's second sweep of the season after the Lancers defeated Tarleton State 5-3 during the series finale. The three-game series win marks the first time since 2024 that the Lancers have swept during a Western Athletic Conference weekend and improves Gary Adcock's squad to 9-9 in the conference standings while moving to 26-22 on the year.
The Sunday duel had Friday night energy as the low-scoring affair saw very few base runners come across home plate due to solid pitching. The Lancers held the Texans scoreless through eight innings but managed to add a few runs to the board across the first six innings courtesy of Andrew Walters and Nicholas Dumesnil. CBU's biggest offensive inning came in the bottom of the seventh as Walters came in clutch again with a well-placed single to add another two RBI to his final line after Ben Castelli knocked in a run earlier in the inning.
The Texans did not go down without a fight and put two base-runners on in the top of the ninth with one out before Sergio Guerra knocked a three-run homer to put the visitors within two. The Lancer pitching staff held fast as Riley Hunsaker entered and secured the next two outs on forced groundouts to complete his first collegiate save. It was Cameron Teper who had a phenomenal start for California Baptist, posting three hits and no runs across 5.2 innings of work against the Texans. Walters led the way for the Lancers offensively, carding two hits and three RBI during his time at the plate.
As it currently stands, CBU's sweep over the Texans pushes themselves to a tie for fifth place after UT Arlington secured a sweep over Utah Valley earlier this weekend. The next two series carry big seeding implications for the top seven squads this season, making this one of the most muddled conference standings as the end of the season approaches.
Before the Lancers' final road WAC series this upcoming weekend, CBU will host #8 UC Irvine on Tuesday evening at Totman Stadium for the first time in program history. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and tickets can be purchased here.
