Westlund Leads Lancers Past Texans

RIVERSIDE--- Ava Westlund came in clutch for the California Baptist women's soccer team on Sunday evening as CBU welcomed Tarleton State to Riverside for the squads' second Western Athletic Conference game of the season. Westlund secured a brace during the match-up, helping the Lancers improve to 2-0 in conference play and 6-5-1 on the season.
It was a quiet first half on both sides of the pitch as both teams fired off just three shots each. During the second half, CBU's offense came to life as the Lancers unleashed 11 shots with seven on frame. Anja Jestrovich led the attack with three shots on frame and came in clutch during the 68th minute with a beautiful cross off a free kick that Westlund put in the back of the goal with her head.
The 1-0 lead sparked new life in the Lancer defense, which continued to shut down the Texans' attack through the next 22 minutes. With TSU pressing so high on offense, CBU was able to counter several times, and in the 82nd minute, Kaylee Hauck drove a ball down the left side of the field before passing it off to Westlund again for her second goal of the night.
The brace marks six goals on the season for Westlund and a solid start to conference play for the Lancers. Utah Valley, CBU, and Utah Tech are the lone squads without a loss in the WAC yet, sitting at the top of the conference standings.
"Really proud of our team's work, focus, and execution tonight," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We're maturing and getting better each game. Great goals were scored by Ava Westlund, with assists from Kaylee Hauck and Anya Jestrovic. I thought we had almost two more, but unfortunately, we hit the post. Mikayla O'Brien and our defense were stellar, earning the shutout. Coming out of opening weekend with 6 points is huge. Now we need to rest up and get back to the training field to prepare for our next opponent".
The Lancers will now turn their attention to their single game this week against Utah Valley in Orem on Friday evening at 6 p.m. PST.
