ST. GEORGE, UT--- The California Baptist University women's basketball improved to 6-1 in conference action on Thursday night as they defeated Utah Tech 67-61 on the road in the Burns Arena.
The win gives them sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings and was the team's third straight conference road win of the season. Utah Tech falls to 1-6 in the standings and 6-11 overall. The win marks its 19th in the last 20 matchups with Utah Tech, with only one loss in the stretch coming in February of 2022.
Early turnover trouble plagued the Lancers in the opening quarter, leading to a 9-2 start for the Trailblazers. Lauren Olsen kept CBU's offense afloat with the first seven points of the game to keep CBU in the ball game. The Lancer defense would close out the quarter well, only allowing Utah Tech to score one field goal over the final three minutes to pull within two points at the end of ten minutes.
It wouldn't be long until the Lancers captured their first lead of the game as they began the second period on a 12-2 run to take a 26-21 lead midway through the quarter. The Trailblazers battled back to retake the lead a few minutes later, as the two teams went back and forth for the majority of the quarter. The Lancers' press forced a handful of UTU turnovers, which led to easy baskets for CBU, but CBU's turnover woes continued, as they committed 11 in the first half. The Trailblazers would close out the half on a 9-4 run to take a 33-31 lead into halftime.
Utah Tech controlled the third period and took its largest lead of the game, leading by eight at 42-34. The Lancers would battle back and would put together solid offensive and defensive possessions down the stretch of the frame to pull within three points heading into the fourth quarter.
CBU came out on fire to begin the fourth quarter, opening the period on a 12-3 run to give them their largest lead of the game at eight points. CBU would control the momentum for the next several minutes, but Utah Tech would battle back and eventually pull within two points with a little under four minutes remaining. Olsen would connect on a clutch triple with 2:20 remaining to give the Lancers a two-possession advantage. CBU's defense would close out the game with a critical forced turnover with 31 seconds remaining, and free throws would close out the victory 67-61.
Khloe Lemon, for the second straight time against Utah Tech, led the Lancers in scoring off the bench with 16 points, while Emma Johansson and Lauren Olsen had 15 points and 14 points, respectively. Filipa Barros showcased her defensive prowess with a game-high 12 rebounds and five steals. CBU's bench, led by Lemon, would be a major advantage for the Lancers, as they outscored Utah Tech 23-9.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain in Utah to take on Utah Valley on Saturday, January 24, for a 1 PM PT tipoff.
