ARLINGTON, TX --- The Lancers added their name to a logjam at the top of the WAC standings, as CBU took down UT Arlington in overtime on Saturday. Backed by 13 overtime points from Dominique Daniels Jr., the Lancers fought off a late run from UT Arlington that forced overtime, extending CBU's win streak to six.
CBU is now one of three teams tied at 6-3 in the WAC standings. UT Arlington and Utah Valley join the Lancers in the three-way tie for the conference's top seed.
It did not feel as if overtime would be in the cards for Saturday, thanks to a 12-point lead the Lancers held with under four minutes remaining in regulation. But the Mavericks had other plans, embarking on a 12-2 run in the closing minutes to level the score. The equalizing basket came with 1.5 seconds remaining on a tip-in dunk from Amari Reed.
A three-quarters-length heave from Daniels Jr. at the horn missed, pushing CBU to an extra period for the second game in a row.
"I told our guys this is going to be a 40-minute scrap," said head coach Rick Croy. "I lied to them, it was 45. Credit to Arlington. We know their competitive spirit, and we anticipated this to be a game that was going down to the wire."
Momentum was on the side of Arlington entering overtime, but it quickly flipped to the side of the Lancers as an 8-2 run gave CBU the early lead. All eight of those points were scored by Daniels Jr., who dropped 13 points in the overtime period. Daniels Jr. scored ten points in the overtime period last weekend against Utah Valley.
The offensive outburst continued for the Lancers, who put up 19 points in the extra frame, compared to nine for the Mavericks, giving CBU an 87-77 victory.
It was a collective effort out of CBU in the win as five players finished in double figures. Daniels Jr. again led the way with 28 points, extending him over 20 points for the 14th time this season. Jayden Jackson was next with a season-high 19 points.
"The thing I'm most proud of with Jayden is the leadership," added Croy. "It's not commonplace to get leadership out of the portal. You can get skill talent. There's many things that you can ascertain through the portal, but it's not always commonplace to get leadership. What he brings to our program on a daily basis is what we appreciate the most."
Nate Garcia ended the game with a career-high 13 points on 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Martel Williams finished with 11 points, and Bradey Henige closed with ten.
Croy spoke about the scoring balance, noting, "We've had a great next man up mentality the entire year. Every group is going to have a guy out, or a couple of guys out. The challenge has been improving."
The Lancers played their final conference game in Texas on Saturday, as their remaining road games will be in Utah. CBU will transition from the WAC to the Big West next season.
Next up for the Lancers is a duo of home games next week, starting with Tarleton State on Thursday, February 5. Abilene Christian will then visit the Fowler Events Center on Saturday, February 7.
