Lancers Battle in 1-0 Loss at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. – California Baptist women's soccer battled throughout Saturday night's Big West match up but came up short in a 1-0 loss to Long Beach State at George Allen Field.
The Lancers move to 6-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in Big West play as they reach the midway point of the season. Despite rainy conditions, CBU worked to create opportunities on the attacking end while keeping the game within reach defensively.
"This is a tough result to accept but one we need to learn from as we go forward," said head coach KRisten St. Clair.
"We dominated the first twenty minutes in the first half then got too casual in possession. Resulting in a few unnecessary turnovers, one which led to deflected shot going in under the crossbar. Â
I was impressed with our groups reset and fight coming out of halftime as we dominated play in the second half. I honestly thought we would get the equalizer goal on a number of occasions but that didn't go our way. Disappointing to drop points on the road but impressed with our teams response to adversity and work rate to get back into the game. Unfortunately we just ran out of time."
CBU looked to establish its attack early, earning corner kicks and working the ball into the attacking third. Jessica Ramirez recorded the Lancers' first shot in the fifth minute, while junior forward Tyra King put a shot on target in the 23rd minute that was saved by the Long Beach State goalkeeper.
The Beach broke through in the 34th minute to give the home team a 1-0 advantage. CBU continued to compete defensively and looked to respond before halftime, earning another corner kick late in the opening period.
The Lancers increased their attacking pressure in the second half, creating several opportunities to find an equalizer. Anja Jestrovic put a shot on target in the 63rd minute, forcing a save, while Maya Yoshimura and Mikayla Benavidez added attempts as CBU continued to push forward. CBU also earned two second-half corner kicks, including one in the closing minutes, but was unable to find the equalizer.
Graduate goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien finished with five saves, including four in the second half, to keep the Lancers within striking distance. CBU recorded seven shots, three on goal and four corner kicks over the course of the match.
The Lancers return home to Edwards Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 14, to host Utah Valley as they continue Big West play.
