RIVERSIDE--- The CBU Baseball team made it a 2-0 series for themselves on Friday evening as the heroics of Matt Chavez and the pitching staff carried them to a 5-0 shutout of the Seattle U Redhawks at Totman Stadium.
The win makes it five straight for the Lancers as they move to 5-1 in the early portion of the non-conference schedule, while the Redhawks drop to 0-5 following the tough loss.
It was a pitcher's duel to open the game between CBU's Michael Malki and SU's Travis Farrell. Malki got himself out of some early trouble as the Redhawks loaded the bases off walks in the first and second innings. Malki would register seven strikeouts over his four innings of work while only allowing two hits. Farrell was doing equally as well over the first few innings, with five strikeouts in the opening two innings, and just one hit allowed. CBU broke through in the bottom of the third inning with Matt Chavez earning his first career home run, lining one deep out to left field for a solo shot to get the Lancers on the board.
Offense came in bunches for the Lancers as they would tack on three more runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open a bit. The runs would come courtesy of Chavez again as he would follow up his first career home run with another deep shot to left field in nearly the exact spot as the first one. The home run from Chavez would bring home Carter Eberhard, while Connor Ross would score earlier in the inning off a wild pitch to make it 4-0 in favor of CBU.
Niko Urquidi would get the nod as the first reliever of the evening for the Lancers in the top of the fifth and would go three full innings without allowing a run and would put no baserunners on for the Redhawks. CBU would further its lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double from Bryce McFeeley to bring home Chris Ramirez, who had singled to lead off the inning. Ben Castelli would single to second base on the next at bat, but the Redhawks would get out of the jam with a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning and mitigate the damage.
Both teams would face some solid pitching down the stretch from a host of relievers as the two teams went scoreless for the final three and a half innings of play. Noah Smith and Carson Olsen would get nods from the bullpen, with Olsen finishing off the Redhawks with four strikeouts in a little over an inning of work while allowing just one hit. CBU would allow just three hits the whole night as a pitching staff and would register ten hits for the 5-0 shutout.
Chavez was the hero of the night with two home runs and three RBI, while Castelli and Ramirez were the only other Lancers with multiple hits, smacking two apiece. Urquidi was credited with the win after pitching three solid innings as a reliever and would face nine total batters.
The Lancers will be back at Totman Stadium on Saturday, February 21, at 5 PM for game three of the series with SU.
