CBU Drops Road Match in Irvine to #10 UCI

IRVINE, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo faced its second top 10 matchup of the season on Friday evening as they traveled to Irvine to take on the #10 UCI Anteaters. CBU hung in early but would ultimately fall 15-11 to the Anteaters. The loss drops CBU to 11-8 on the season.
CBU gave the Anteaters all they could handle early in the game, as their defense held UCI to only one goal for nearly 10 and a half minutes of game time. The Lancers would manage two early goals as they would hold the early advantage over the Anteaters. UCI got back in the game on the strength of its defense as the two teams went into halftime knotted at three goals apiece.
The Anteaters regrouped at halftime and came out with an offensive flurry, scoring five unanswered goals to begin the period and forcing Julie Snodgrass to huddle her team. Madison Haworth would eventually break up the UCI scoring streak in the waning minutes of the third period, and Emmie Ramirez would get another before the buzzer sounded as CBU trailed 11-5 heading into the fourth period. The Lancers would play UCI even in the fourth quarter, but the third-period damage was far too severe to overcome as the Anteaters would defend their home pool 15-11 for the victory.
It was another solid showing from sophomore attacker Emmie Ramirez, who carried the Lancers' offense with five goals on nine shots. Niya Bumbaca was the only other Lancer with a multiple-point total, with three points on one made goal and two assists. Delilah Moreno led the defensive effort with four steals and tacked on an assist as well.
NEXT: The Lancers will have a short turnaround as they will host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, March 14, at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
