CLAREMONT, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team split the opening day of the Claremont Convergence Tournament as they would rout Claremont Mudd-Scripps before falling to #25 Pomona-Pitzer in the evening match. The split gives CBU a double-digit win total for the season at 10-6
GAME 1 vs Claremont Mudd-Scripps: CBU 15 CMS 7
The defenses were dominant earlier in the match, with neither team scoring until nearly five minutes into the match. The Athens struck first, however, the Lancers would earn a powerplay opportunity on the ensuing possession and would cash it in via Niya Bumbaca to quickly tie the game. Ruffer would add in another moments later as CBU took a 2-1 lead at the end of the opening frame.
The Lancers' offense would start to get going in the second period, and Delilah Moreno would deposit the first two goals of the period, including one on a penalty shot. CBU would deliver three more goals on the back end of the quarter, making it 7-3 at the half against the Athenas. CBU put the match out of reach in the opening minutes of the third period as they would score four unanswered to open up an eight-goal advantage. CMS would match the Lancers' goal total in the fourth period, but it would not be enough as CBU would win its first game of the tournament 15-7 at Axelrood Pool.
Aubrey Newton had one of the best games of her career in the victory, with four goals on four shot attempts, and would add an assist to make it a five-point day for the senior. Devyn Ruffer continued her strong play of late with a hat trick, and Moreno would be the final Lancer to earn three or more goals on the day. Niya Bumbaca and Emmie Ramirez each had two goals, while Tyanna Schneider would tally six saves in goal to help the Lancers pick up their tenth win of the season.
GAME #2 vs #25 Pomona-Pitzer: CBU 9 P-P 10
The Lancers and Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer would finalize day one of the Claremont Convergence Tournament as they would battle in the night game at Haldeman Pool. The two teams were even through 16 minutes of action as both would net five goals in the first half.
The Sagehens would take an early advantage in the second half, scoring the first two goals of the frame before CBU was able to answer with a quick goal from Emmie Ramirez. Pomona-Pitzer would press its advantage with an early goal in the fourth period that would give it a two-goal advantage with 6:22 remaining to force a Julie Snodgrass timeout. Ramirez would again answer to make it a one-score game with 4:01, but the Sagehens would again respond and distance themselves from the Lancers.
Julia Almendariz would give CBU life in the waning minutes with a lob shot to cut the deficit to one with 1:22 remaining. The Lancers would force a turnover on the ensuing possession, but could not cash in the tying goal as the Sagehens would run out the clock to escape with a 10-9 win over the Lancers in their home pool. Niya Bumbaca carried the CBU offense with four goals and five total points, accounting for over half of the team's total offensive production. Ramirez scored twice in the defeat, while Tyanna Schneider would tally eight saves.
NEXT: The Lancers will continue on day two of the Convergence Tournament on Saturday, March 7, as they face Iona and #18 Marist in Orange, California.
