ORANGE, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team finalized its run at the Convergence Tournament on Saturday, earning another split with a win over Iona and a loss to #18 Marist in Orange, California. The split pushes the Lancers' record to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in neutral matches this season.
GAME 1 vs IONA: CBU 14 Iona 10
The Lancers and Gaels would kick off day two at the Claremont Convergence Tournament in the first matchup between the two programs since 2019. CBU got off to a hot start, racking up an early 5-3 lead in the first half. The Gaels would score three straight goals in the second period to take a goal lead, but the Lancers would respond with a 3-0 run of their own to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
The Gaels would score the first two goals of the second half, but CBU would once again have a response with another 3-0 capped off by Emmie Ramirez's third goal of the contest up until that point. Iona put two more through the back of the net with 6:00 remaining to make it a one-goal lead for CBU, but the Lancers would secure the victory with a 3-0 run to end the match and finalize the 14-10 victory over Iona.
Ramirez put together another incredible match in her sophomore season with seven total points that included five goals and two assists. Ramirez accounted for half of the Lancer offense and would tack on two more steals to her impressive season total as well. Niya Bumbaca and Aubrey Newton would each have three points in the match, while Tyanna Schneider and Amelia Urry would each have five saves in the victory in the cage.
GAME 2 vs #18 MARIST: CBU 5 Marist 13
The final game of the tournament for the Lancers was a ranked matchup with #18 Marist. It would be the second matchup between the two teams from opposite coasts since 2018. Marist started strong, collecting a 7-1 advantage in the opening 11 minutes of action. Emmie Ramirez would break up the large scoring run for Marist to end the first half, but CBU would still trail by five goals.
