Malki and Urquidi lead Lancers Past Utah Tech

RIVERSIDE--- Michael Malki delivered another electric performance on Friday night as California Baptist welcomed Utah Tech to Totman Stadium, as Western Athletic Conference play continued. Malki's five innings from the bump with five strikeouts gave way to his ninth pitching victory this season, leading the nation. CBU marked a 7-3 competitive win over the Trailblazers and improved to a 6-2 conference record with a 32-10 overall record this season.
The Lancers drew first blood after a pair of scoreless innings, earning their first run off a groundout before Connor Ross sent the first home run way out of the ballpark to secure a two-run lead. Utah Tech answered in the following inning with an RBI single to cut down the deficit, but the Lancers doubled down with two more runs across the next two innings. A Carter Eberhard dinger highlighted that offensive bout before Ramirez picked up two more RBI with a single.
The Trailblazers' impressive offense didn't back down and earned an RBI double in the top of the eighth, but Cole Howarth answered the call with a single that scored Riley Hunsaker to regain the four-run lead. Niko Urquidi slammed the door on Utah Tech, picking up his third save with six strikeouts for the convincing win. Malki and Urquidi combined for 11 strikeouts, as Malki ties the CBU Division I pitching victories record at nine for his performance at the helm.
The Lancers will welcome UTU back tomorrow at 5 p.m., the second installment of the WAC series.
