RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University baseball team dropped the series with Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon, falling 19-2 to visiting Hornets at Totman Stadium.
The loss will force the Lancers to need some help next weekend to earn a share of the regular-season title, as they would need the Hornets to sweep Tarleton State to set up a three-way tie for the title. Before the game began, the Lancers celebrated Senior Day with 10 Lancers being honored in a pre-game ceremony.
CBU took the first lead of the game as Ramirez would single in the lead-off spot before being brought home on a Cole Hansen double down the left field line. The Hornets answered right back at the top of the second with a solo shot to right field before the Lancer defense would end the inning with a double play to strand a Hornet base runner. Sac State would have a huge third inning, with five total hits, bringing in three runs. The damage would be limited by a pair of Luis Becerra outs that would end the inning with CBU trailing 4-1.
The next three and a half innings would be scoreless before Sac State delivered the knockout blow in the seventh with five more runs, and then would tack on ten more in the eighth to evoke the run-rule and end the game 19-2.
Ramirez would still shine despite the loss, with three hits in four plate appearances, and would score both of the Lancer runs as well. Becerra had a solid showing on the mound in a relief appearance with just three hits allowed through 3.1 innings of work and would tack on seven strikeouts.
The Lancers will hit the road for a quick trip tomorrow evening to Santa Barbara to take on the Gauchos in the final midweek tilt of the season.
