Lancers Take Down UC Riverside in Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Lancers earned their first Big West victory of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating crosstown rival UC Riverside 2-0 behind goals from freshman Bella D'Amico and senior Anja Jestrovic in the inaugural Crosstown Showdown.
CBU improved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Big West play, while the Highlanders fell to 2-7 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play. The victory marked the Lancers' fourth consecutive win over UCR and extended their unbeaten streak against the Highlanders to five straight matches. It was also their sixth shutout of the season.
The victory also gave CBU the first point in the newly established Crosstown Showdown rivalry. The annual competition between CBU and UCR features a points system across the academic year, with a trophy awarded to the school that finishes with the most points.
Despite the hot and sunny conditions that led to water breaks during the match, the Lancers came out attacking and controlled possession early. CBU consistently created opportunities in the attacking half, including an early chance from senior forward Tyra King, who found the back of the net after dribbling past the UCR defense. The goal, however, was waved off due to an offside call.
CBU continued to pressure the Highlanders and broke through in the 19th minute. D'Amico received the ball near the top of the box and finished with a semi-volley around a UCR defender to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage. Senior Jessica Ramirez was credited with the assist, her first of the season, and D'Amico's second goal of the season so far.
The Lancers doubled their lead later in the half following a corner-kick opportunity. Jestrovic played the corner short to Ramirez, who returned the ball to Jestrovic. The senior midfielder then fired a shot from outside the box that curled into the net to give CBU a 2-0 lead. It is Jestrovic's third goal of the season.
The Lancers carried the two-goal advantage into halftime, with both teams recording five shots and two saves through the opening 45 minutes.
As the heat continued into the second half, both teams made several substitutions. CBU continued to create opportunities, with King and sophomore forward Kandace Koerth each putting shots toward the UCR goal, but neither was able to add to the Lancers' lead.
Graduate goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien turned in another strong performance before giving way to redshirt sophomore Rebecca Winton late in the match. Winton immediately made an impact, making several key saves to preserve the shutout, including a penalty-kick save late in the match.
"Today we did a really good job focusing on what we could control," said head coach Kristen St. Clair.
"Rivalry games always add extra excitement. I was really impressed with our team's composure, grit and execution to earn 3 points on the road, on turf during midday heat. Great goals from Bella D'Amico and Anya Jestrovic, assisted by Jess Ramirez and Tyra King. I thought we had a third but was ultimately called back on review. Becca made an incredible save on the pk at the end of the game!
Every line did their job today and every player played a vital role in this game for us. We'll enjoy this win tonight and begin preparing for our next opponent."

The Lancers return home next week for a two-game homestand, welcoming UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara to CBU Soccer Stadium.
