RIVERSIDE – The Lancers battled UC San Diego to a scoreless draw Wednesday night at CBU Soccer Stadium, moving to 6-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Big West play.
Both teams created opportunities throughout the match, but neither could find the breakthrough. The 0-0 draw also marked the Lancers' eighth shutout of the season, leaving them one shy of the Division I-era program record.
CBU goalkeeper Rebecca Winton made her second start of the season and kept the Tritons off the scoreboard with five saves, including two in the opening half. Her first save came in the 23rd minute on a shot toward the top-left corner.
CBU came out attacking early, with Bella D'Amico recording a shot in the opening two minutes before Nikki Mau nearly put the Lancers ahead in the fourth minute, hitting the right post. CBU finished the half with six shots while limiting UC San Diego to seven, sending the match into halftime tied 0-0.
The Tritons continued to pressure after the break, but Winton came up with three more saves to preserve the shutout. CBU looked for its own chances late, with Mikayla Benavidez and Katrina Marsh each recording a shot in the final two minutes, but neither side could find a game-winning goal.
"Not our sharpest performance tonight on either side of the ball," said head coach Kristen St. Clair.
"Offensively we still created the most dangerous scoring opportunities in the game. We had three great opportunities in the first 10 minutes that we should have converted. After that we were too casual in our possession resulting in preventable turnovers. Our opponent had one opportunity that Becca Winton handled well. A hard lesson we learned tonight, taking one point at home instead of 3 points. We're a good team and we know what we are capable of with proactive execution and sharper performance. We'll learn from this and move forward."
The Lancers finished with nine shots, one on goal and three corner kicks. Ava Lopez and Taylor Held each played all 90 minutes, while Anja Jestrovic and Caitlin Motil received yellow cards.
The LAncers remain unbeaten at home this season, while UC San Diego moves to 5-2-4 overall and 1-0-2 in conference play with the draw.
CBU returns to CBU Soccer Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m. to take on UC Santa Barbara for the second time this season. Tickets are available at cbulancers.com, and the match will be streamed on ESPN.
