IRVINE, Calif. ? There couldn't have been two more different games played by California Baptist in a doubleheader sweep over Concordia, Tuesday.
The Lancers (39-3, 12-0) scattered 13 hits while scoring four runs across three different innings in a 4-2 win over the Eagles (29-14, 3-9) in the opener. In the nightcap, CBU went for the big inning scoring eight of its nine runs, in a 9-4 victory, in third inning.
In the opener, Sara Goforth and Nikki Lowe had perfect and almost mirror days at the plate. Each went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. The only difference was that Goforth had an RBI double.
The Lancers got on the board early scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. After Goforth and Lowe each reached with a walk, Nicole Shoemaker laced a single back up the middle scoring both to give CBU a 2-0 advantage.
Concordia answered with a pair of runs on three hits to tie the game at two. Those were the only runs that Amy Thomas (21-2) allowed and gave up just four more hits from that point on.
The Lancers scored the game-winning run in the second on a pair of two-out hits by Kelly Maconachy and Goforth. After Maconachy singled, she scored on a double to left field by Goforth. Maconachy also scored the final run of the game when she stole home with two outs in the fourth.
In the nightcap, CBU needed just one inning to bury Concordia. The Eagles actually took an early lead scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but the Lancers more than answered the bell in the third.
Of the 11 batters that had stepped to the plate in the third, nine reached base and eight crossed the plate. Erin Moore got the ball rolling with a two-RBI single that scored Chantal Millard and Lowe. Moore then came around to score, along with Karina Slauenwhite, when Allison Dennis ripped a double down the left field line as CBU climbed out to a 4-2 lead.
The Lancers hung three more runs on the board as Sarah Hurlbut, Dennis and Maconachy all scored on a pair of errors by the Eagles. Goforth scored the final run on a two-out double to left center by Lowe to give the Lancers an 8-2 lead.
Goforth scored the only other run for CBU on another Concordia error in the fifth. The Eagles tried to rally scoring a run each in the sixth and seventh innings, but Melanie Ahumada (18-1) closed the door to secure the win.
California Baptist will now get set for another top-five battle with Point Loma Nazarene, Saturday, in a noon doubleheader.
