RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Nicole Shoemaker went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a two runs scored to lead California Baptist University to a doubleheader sweep (7-0, 9-1) over Chapman Tuesday afternoon.
The Lancers (18-0) scored 16 runs on 21 hits while the pitching staff allowed no earned runs and allowed just three hits.
Shoemaker and Tina Galinato paved the way in the opener with Shoemaker going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Galinato going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Ashley Boyd put the Lancers on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when she scored on an Erin Moore single.
CBU added three more in each of the third and fourth innings. It was Boyd again who got things started with a lead off single in the third before the Lancers got four straight hits with two outs. Sarah Strong drove in Boyd with a double before Shoemaker singled to bring home Strong. Nina Cabrales then singled before Galinato ripped another single to score Shoemaker to put CBU up 4-0. In the fifth, Shoemaker singled to left to score Boyd and then Galinato ripped a double to the opposite field, scoring both Strong and Lowe.
Tory Ferreira and Emma Holden combined for just the fifth seven-inning game of the year. Ferreira (6-0) threw the first four innings, allowing just one hit and struck out five while Holden threw the final three innings as she allowed no hits and struck out four.
In the nightcap, CBU opened the first inning with four runs and added another in the fifth before capping the game with four more in the fourth
Boyd led off the bottom of the first with a single before Shoemaker drew a one-out walk. Caty Reeves drove them both in with a single up the middle to put CBU up 2-0. Kendall Gorham then cleared the bases in the next at bat with her first home run of the year; a two-run shot to left center field.
Briana Corral added another run in the second when she went yard to left field to give the Lancers a 5-0 lead.
Chapman scored its first run of the day in the top of the fourth, but CBU answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four more runs. Shoemaker started the rally when she hit a sac fly to right to score Boyd. Then after Strong and Reeves drew back-to-back walks, Gorham lifted a single to right field to score Lowe and Strong. Silva drove in the final run of the game with a single up the middle to put the Lancers up 9-1.
Melanie Ahumada (7-0) threw the first four innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and struck out two. Gorham threw the final inning of play, allowing just one hit.
The Lancers now hit the road for the first time this year when they travel to Azusa Pacific, Saturday, before heading out to No. 20 Biola, Tuesday.
