IRVINE, Calif. ? Kendall Gorham and the rest of California Baptist University proved the split with Concordia earlier in the year was a fluke with a doubleheader sweep Saturday at CU field.
Gorham went 6-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Lancers (47-3, 19-3 GSAC) to a 6-0 and 11-0 win over the Eagles (36-16, 13-7).
The top four hitters for the Lancers went 9-for-15 with five RBIs and four runs scored in the opener. CBU as a team was 15-for-33. Nikki Lowe led the way, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Ashley Boyd, Sarah Hurlbut and Sarah Strong were all 2-for-4. Strong drove in a pair of runs while Boyd scored two. Boyd and Hurlbut each drove in a run as well. Gorham was also 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Tory Ferreira (17-0) threw her 11th complete game and eighth shutout of the year. She allowed just three hits and struck out four in seven innings of work.
The Lancers scored first in the top of the first after leading the game off with three straight hits. Boyd singled to right field before Lowe doubled down the left field line. Hurlbut then drove home Boyd with a double to left.
Lowe made it 2-0 in the third with her 12th home run of the year before Caty Reeves drove home Silva to make it 3-0 in the fourth. CBU put the game away in the sixth with three more runs that were all scored with two outs. After Gorham hit a one out single to short, Briana Corral moved her over to second with a sac bunt. Boyd then ripped a double to left center to score Gorham. Lowe was intentionally walked and Hurlbut singled to short to load the bases. Strong then roped a single up the middle to score the final two runs of the game as Boyd and Lowe crossed the plate.
While the top half of the lineup did the damage in the opener, it was the bottom half who broke out the sticks on the nightcap.
Gorham and Nina Cabrales combined to go 6-for-6 with five RBIs and five runs scored. Gorham went 3-for-3 with three RBIs that included her eighth home run of the year, and two runs scored. Cabrales hit her third home run of the season in going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Emma Holden threw all five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four.
CBU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Silva drove in Nicole Shoemaker with a double to left center and Gorham singled to center to drive in Silva to make it 2-0. Corral made it 3-0 when she brought home Cabrales with a squeeze bunt and Boyd drove in Gorham for the final run of the inning.
The Lancers added another in the fourth on a Gorham single and added six more in the fifth to put it away.
