RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- On the first day of the Ringor SoCal Smash, the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist University smashed SoCal. And NorCal.
The Lancers started the day with 14 hits in a 12-1, five-inning win over No. 20 Cal State San Marcos and then completed the day with an 12-run third inning in a 14-0, five-inning win over Holy Names.
CBU remains undefeated and moves to 13-0 on the season. Cal State San Marcos, which defeated Holy Names 8-2 in the day's first game, falls to 6-4, while the Hawks fall to 2-4. The Ringor SoCal Smash concludes Saturday.
In the win against the nationally-ranked Cougars, half of the Lancers' 14 hits were for extra bases. The Lancers used two big innings to invoke the mercy-rule for the eighth time this year.
It all started in the first when the Lancers put up six runs right out of the gate. Caty Reeves and Sarah Hurlbut hit back-to-back run scoring doubles, Sarah Strong had an RBI single, and Nina Cabrales had a two-RBI double.
Tina Galinato hit an inside-the-park home run down the left field line to give the Lancers a 7-0 lead in the third.
Then in the fourth, Reeves hit a two-run blast to center, Sloan McHann added a two-RBI single down the left field line, and Jordan Flora had a pinch-hit double to the left centerfield wall, and that was more than enough for a red-hot Emma Holden, who continued to dominate.
Holden went all five innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits. She struck out 10, and has struck out 10 or more in all five of her starts. That unearned run came with two outs in the third and brought an end to the Lancers' NAIA-record streak of 48.2 consecutive scoreless innings, bettering the previous record of 45 set by by Shorter (Ga.) last year.
Kendall Gorham was 3-for-3 with three singles. Reeves had three hits and four RBIs. Eight other Lancers had a hit.
It took the Lancers a little longer to get started in the nightcap, but when they got started it was more of the same and then some. After two scoreless frames, the Lancers erupted for 12 runs and 10 hits, five of which were doubles, in the third.
Ashley Boyd led off with her fourth homer of the season, a blast to left center. Hurlbut later smashed her fifth bomb of the season to deep left. Flora, McHann and Mara Rodriguez hit back-to-back-to-back doubles. Reeves and Hurlbut also had two-baggers. Hurlbut alone had five RBIs in the inning.
Danae Leiser hit her first career home run, a two-run shot, in the fourth.
Reigning NAIA Pitcher of the Year Tory Ferreira scattered three singles in picking up her fifth win of the season. She struck out three and remains a perfect 29-0 in her brief two-year collegiate career.
Boyd, Reeves, Hurlbut, Flora and Rodriguez each had two hits.
