RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was a perfect day for softball as another GSAC sweep for No. 1 California Baptist University on Tuesday was highlighted by a perfect game and walk-off grand-slam in the opener.
CBU defeated Vanguard, 11-0, in five innings in the early game and came back to take the nightcap, 5-0.
After struggling somewhat in her last few starts, Tory Ferreira came out and pitched brilliantly in the opener, giving up no hits and no walks for the perfect game. She was helped by Kendall Gorham's grand slam in the fifth inning which put the Lancers up 11-0 and ended the game.
Ashley Boyd led off the game with a deep shot that easily cleared the scoreboard in right center. CBU also scored three runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead from the start of the ballgame.
Ferreira went 2.2 innings in her last outing giving up five earned runs in a no-decision. In her perfect game win today, Ferreira had three strike outs. She got help on several occasions from the Lancer outfielders, who were battling a nasty wind to right all game. The victory brings her record to 11-1.
The nightcap didn't have quite as many fireworks but was a solid overall performance for CBU.
Melanie Ahumada got the win for the Lancers, going seven innings and giving up four hits no walks and no runs with nine strike outs. Ahumada now has 78 strikeouts on the year and is 9-0.
CBU once again jumped on the opposition early, getting two runs in the bottom of the first on a single by Sarah Hurlbut. The Lancers looked ready for another offensive explosion, but Lion pitcher Katharine Jablonski settled down and wouldn't allow another run until the fifth inning when Briana Corral chased her from the game with a two-run double.
Sloan McHann capped the Lancer scoring for the day with a line drive homer that stayed just inside the right field foul pole.
CBU is now 37-1 overall, 11-1 GSAC. Vanguard drops to 18-14, 4-8.
