ORANGE, Calif. --- Kendall Gorham continued her domination at the plate on Friday, breaking the California Baptist University single season home run record with two long-balls in the opening game of the Lancers' sweep at the Sun West Invitational.
No. 1 CBU defeated Tufts (Mass.), 9-1 (five innings) in the opening game of the day, then took down Hamline (Minn.) 8-0 (six innings).
Gorham got her 16th homer of the year in the first inning against Tufts, driving in Ashley Boyd ahead of her and making it 2-0. With one out in the third Gorham again sent a shot over the center field wall for her 17th home run of the season. She breaks the previous mark of 16 set by Boyd last season.
“Kendall is a special player and what she has been doing at the plate has been fun to watch this year,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “She is the type of hitter that can change the game with one swing of the bat and she has been doing that all season.”
Gorham's solo-shot opened up a five-run inning for the Lancers that sealed the victory for Tory Ferreira. Ferreira went five innings giving up five hits and one run.
Nina Cabrales was also 2-for-2 at the plate driving in a pair of runs.
After watching Gorham break the home run record she previously held, Boyd decided to turn the power on in the second game of the day hitting a three-run homer in the second inning against Hamline. It was Boyd's seventh home run of the year.
Sloan McHann also hit her eighth home run of the year, a solo-shot in the fourth, to put the Lancers up 7-0. Rebecca Hearon singled in Andie Banuelos to end the game in the sixth inning.
The four home runs hit by CBU now give the team a total of 69 on the season. The Lancers are third in the NAIA in home runs per game.
Melanie Ahumada got the win against Hamline going the full six innings, giving up five hits and no runs. Ahumada struck out nine batters for her second straight appearance. She now has 87 strike outs on the year.
The two wins bring the Lancers to 39-1 overall.
