MARATHON SPLIT

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University and No. 13 Cal State San Marcos put in a full night's work.
Literally.
After 17 innings, nearly eight hours, a two-hour rain delay, a brief sprinkler delay and more than 260 pitches from CSUSM hurler Brenna Sandberg, the Cougars and Lancers decided to call it a night, and when the final pitch was thrown at 11:13 p.m. Tuesday night, the teams shared the wealth and split a non-conference doubleheader.
The Lancers won the opener, 6-5, in 10 innings to run their winning streak to 23 straight before the Cougars bounced back with a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
The split moves the Lancers to 52-2 overall. The Cougars are now 33-13.
With finals looming in just two days, the Lancers were probably planning on pulling a few all-nighters to prep. They probably weren't thinking that one of those all-nighters would be on the field tonight, but that's nearly what they got. It was so late that even the resident John C. Funk Stadium bat came out to fly around during the second game that didn't start until after 9 p.m.
In the opener, Jordan Flora ended a nearly five-hour affair with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the tenth that gave the Lancers the win. Flora, who had entered in the top of the ninth behind the plate for starter Caty Reeves, hit Sandberg's 160th pitch of the game into right center easily scoring NAIA Player of the Week Ashley Boyd from third with the game-winner. It was the game's first hit since the fifth inning.
It took a minor comeback for the Lancers just to get to extra innings. The Cougars' Erica Coelho hit a three-run shot in the second, and Ciera Ashman and Alyssa Dronenburg went back-to-back in the third off starter Emma Holden to open a 5-1 lead in the third. Holden, who has only given up six earned runs all year, was tagged for five in 2.2 innings today despite striking out six.
Tory Ferreira (17-1) came on with two outs in the third and only allowed one hit and one walk in the final 7.1 innings, giving the Lancers a chance.
The Cougars' four-run margin was short-lived as the Lancers answered with three runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run shot from Reeves and a solo shot from Tina Galinato.
The Lancers eventually tied the game, scoring on an error in the bottom of the fifth. They got the potential-winning run on first with no outs in the bottom of the sixth when the rain began to fall. When play resumed nearly two hours later, Sandberg struck out the next two batters and got Boyd to fly out to deep left to end the threat. The teams played five more innings.
Boyd hit her 17th home run of the season to lead off the first and give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Reeves and Galinato both had two hits.
In the nightcap, the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the fourth to complete a comeback of their own and take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Cougars tied it when Ferreira struck out Alicia Ingram on a ball in the dirt with runners on the corner, but Ingram reached and Mimi Krutein scored on the third-strike wild pitch. Ashman delivered a two-RBI double on the next pitch to give the Cougars a 6-4 advantage.
They tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Ashman hit a two-out solo shot in the top of the first, the first given up this year by CBU starter Melanie Ahumada. Galinato responded with an RBI double in the bottom half to tie it.
Boyd hit a three-run shot, her 18th of the year and seventh in the past seven games, to left with one out in the second to make it 4-1, but the Cougars' Lauren Nelson's two-RBI single in the second made it 4-3.
Ahumada took her first loss of the season, giving up seven hits and five runs in 3.2 innings. Ferreira went 2.1 innings, giving up four hits and two runs. Holden struck out two in one inning of relief.
Briana Corral and Sarah Hurlbut each had two hits.
Sandberg went a combined 16.1 innings, allowing 10 runs and striking out 16 in both games.
The Lancers hit four more home runs, bringing their season total to 94, just two shy of tying the NAIA single-season record.
