COSTA MESA, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University finished out the regular-season with a pressure packed finale at Vanguard Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers capped a sweep of the Lions with a 2-1 final game in which Emma Holden had a perfect game until the final inning. CBU won the early game 4-1.
Holden allowed two hits and one run in the seventh before inducing a flyout to end the game. Holden struck out 13 before the scrappy Lions made things tense in the final inning. She outdueled VUSC's Katharine Jablonski who also pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and two runs.
After the first Lion batter in the seventh flied out, April Glenn singled up the middle. A sacrifice bunt followed by an Angela St. Croix single moved Glenn to third. The Lancers then had a passed ball allowing Glenn to score before Holden got the final out.
Holden moves to 16-0 on the season.
Mara Rodriguez drove in the only runs for the Lancers with a two-run single to centerfield in the third inning.
Caty Reeves played hero for CBU in the first game of the doubleheader driving in all four of the team's runs. Reeves went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer in the first inning and two-run single in the third.
Tory Ferreira got the first win of the day, pitching seven innings, giving up seven hits and only one run to move to 18-1. The Lions scored their only run on an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth.
The Lancers who had already clinched a GSAC title will host the conference tournament beginning May 4.
