RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University finished an altered Ringor So Cal Smash tournament schedule with a pair of victories over Davenport.
It was the young guns on CBU's roster that led the Lancers to 3-0 and 9-1 wins on Saturday.
Freshman April Vasquez broke a scoreless tie with a solo shot in the fifth inning of the opener and Marshean August made a pair of clutch catches in the following half inning to preserve the shutout.
“It was definitely good to see our freshman step up,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “April's homer was huge and then Marshean made some great plays for us. The late game defensive replacements are something we have this season and it's a good luxury to have in tight ball games like that first one.”
Vasquez led off the fifth with an opposite field homer, scoring the first run of the day for CBU. Clinging to the 1-0 lead Smith inserted August into center field and it paid off. August made the first two outs of the inning running down a deep shot to right center and diving for a ball to left center. Not to be out-done, Lindsay Henry ended the inning with a diving grab on a line drive towards the line at third base to preserve the lead.
August then doubled in a run in the following inning, lacing a ball down the first base line that just stayed fair. On cue, Vasquez stepped to the plate and hit a double to left, moving August to third. Henry followed with a sac fly to center, scoring August and giving the Lancers their 3-0 lead.
Tory Ferreira got the win in the opener, throwing seven innings of four-hit ball without giving up a run.
“As a coach sometimes you would like every game to be easy, but I realize we need those tight games so we know how to play,” said Smith. “I told them right before that inning they needed to focus because one wrong play can mean a loss and they definitely responded.”
The Lancers wasted no time in the final game of the day against the Panthers getting their offense started, knocking in three runs in the first inning and two more in the next two to go up 7-1.
Sloan McHann started the barrage of runs for CBU with a three run shot to left in the first. It was her fourth bomb of the season. Mara Rodriguez hit a home run in the fifth and then got an RBI single in the sixth to end the game.
Davenport's lone run of the day was scored in the first inning on a homer by Heather Brusokas off of Lancer starter Emma Holden. It was the first homer of the season hit against Holden, who got the win with four innings pitched. Courtney McGee finished the final two innings without giving up a hit and striking out three.
Vasquez led CBU on the day, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. McHann also had three RBI, and Rodriguez and Henry had two RBI a piece. August scored a pair of runs and drove in another.
The Lancers move to 15-0 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 0-5 to start their season. CBU will face Mayville State Tuesday.
