TUCSON, Ariz. --- No. 1 California Baptist University steamrolled the competition at the Tucson Invitational Friday, posting 40 runs on 48 hits, in three shutout victories.
The Lancers opened the day with a 12-0 win over Midland, followed that with a modest 7-0 victory over Schreiner and finished the day by exploding for a 21-0 rout over St. Mary's.
Against Midland, a team CBU faced in the NAIA National Tournament last year, the Lancers opened with seven runs in the first inning. Tina Galinato, who broke her arm in the two team's championship meeting last season, led off the game with a solo home run, setting the tone for the entire day.
The Lancers added another five runs to end their opener in five innings.
Emma Holden picked up her 17th win of the season, moving to 17-1 after throwing four innings against Midland. Tory Ferreira threw the final inning to complete the five inning shutout.
CBU went relatively cold in its second contest of the day, going the full seven innings against Schreiner.
CBU scored six of its seven runs in the third inning on three home runs. Danae Leiser added her first homer of the season in the sixth to seal the win. Galinato blasted a solo-shot to lead off the six-run third inning.
Courtney McGee threw five innings, giving up four hits and striking out six to move to 5-0 on the season. Ferreira again came in and finished out the victory with a pair of scoreless innings pitched.
Kendall Gorham got the final start of the day, throwing the full five innings against St. Mary's to move to 2-0 in her second start of the season. Gorham allowed just two hits and struck out six.
Making up for their mere seven run output in the second game, CBU dropped a whopping 21 runs in the first three innings against St. Mary's.
Everyone managed to get in the action in the rout, with McGee hitting her first collegiate home run.
Even the Lancers' junior pitching aces found their way to the plate. Holden worked a walk in the game and Ferreira got an RBI single. Both were firsts in their careers.
CBU posted 19 hits in its opener, 11 in the second game of the day and 18 hits in its finale.
With the three wins the Lancers move to 33-1.
