RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University opened Golden State Athletic Conference play Tuesday night with a pair of 4-1 victories over Azusa Pacific.
The Lancers got a couple of big home runs in the opener and then a pair of big hits from Mara Rodriguez in the nightcap en route to the sweep.
“This is how I think it's going to be this season in our conference,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “I would like to see us hit better, but with the depth of pitching in the GSAC you are going to have to grind some games out and that's what we did tonight.”
Kendall Gorham put the Lancers on top early in the opener, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. APU would answer in the fourth inning, however, when Erika Marmolejo singled in Olivia Wilcox.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Nicole Shoemaker doubled and April Vasquez followed with a walk to put two on for Tina Galinato. Galinato, the Lancers hottest hitter over the past two weeks, stepped up and smashed a three-run shot to right-center field.
It was Galinato's sixth home run in the past 11 games and her eighth of the season.
Emma Holden did the job of holding the Cougars to one run in the game, pitching the full seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out 10 for the win. Holden moves to 18-1 on the season.
“Both of our pitchers were great tonight,” said Smith. “That's what we've been getting this year and it's great when you have close games like this.”
Tory Ferreira matched Holden in the late game, throwing seven innings and holding APU to one run for her 10th win of the season. Ferreira is 10-0 on the year.
CBU's scoring in the second game mirrored the opener, as the Lancers went up on a line drive solo-shot by Rodriguez in the second inning, and then saw APU tie the game in fourth with an RBI single.
Sloan McHann played the part of catalyst in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with a double. McHann was replaced on the bases by Andie Banuelos and Rodriguez stepped up and got her second RBI of the game with a double to right-center.
Caty Reeves would add an RBI single and Vasquez an RBI double to seal the win.
“We didn't swing the bats all that well, but we did just enough to get the win,” said Smith. “They are a good team and they played pretty well tonight.”
The Lancers move to 35-1 overall, 2-0 GSAC on the year with the wins, while the Cougars fall to 15-13, 0-2.
CBU faces Sioux Falls Thursday, before continuing GSAC play at Biola on Saturday.
