KANEOHE, Hawaii — Jasmine Stokes proved to be the golden ticket for California Baptist University Saturday night, scoring the first and final goals of the game to help the Lancers grab their first overtime win of the season. CBU came from behind to defeat Hawaii Pacific 4-3, despite trailing by two goals on two different occasions.,
"HPU is a very good team," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "To their credit, they came ready to play. We started slow, but I'm really proud of the girls for continuing to,work and fight back. Being two goals down twice and continuing to have drive and determination was great to see. It's a sign of a maturing team."
The Lancers conclude their Hawaii trip with their undefeated PacWest record in tact at 4-0-1 and sit 6-4-1 overall. The Sharks drop to,6-4-1 on the season, 3-3 in PacWest play.
After finding themselves in an uncharacteristic 2-0 hole in the first 10 minutes of action, the Lancers didn't panic and rallied behind Stokes as the sophomore put CBU on the board in the 38th minute. Kailey Nishimura passed Stokes a ball, which she chipped up and over the Sharks' goalkeeper from 18 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1.
"Jasmine was big time for us today," said St. Clair. "She's been working really hard on little things and putting in extra time. She was rewarded for her hard work. She was causing problems for HPU's defense all afternoon, which isn't easy against a well-organized team."
Coming out of halftime with the score at 2-1 in favor of the home squad, HPU struck early once more, scoring less than a minute into the second half. Less than five minutes later, however, CBU had a response. Lindsay Vesling forced a Shark own goal, knocking a shot off the defender into the back of the net. Another HPU defensive mistake evened the game at 3-3 in the 69th, followed by neither team scoring the rest of regulation to go into extra time.
Determined to find their first golden goal of the season, the Lancers had a chance in the 99th minute as CBU drew a foul. HPU tried to clear it, but couldn't get it out of harm's way as Silvia Sanchez sent a deep ball back into the 18-yard box. Vesling flicked the ball back toward the penalty spot, where Stokes was making a run at the goal without a single Shark on her trail. Stokes used her knee to redirect the header back on goal, where it bounced past the HPU goalkeeper's outstretched arm for the win.
"Any time you get three points on road, it's an important result," said St. Clair. "It was a good end of a long trip on the road. We'll get back to work on Monday and be ready for Academy of Art."
The Lancers return home to close out the regular season in the comforts of the Lancer Soccer Field, first hosting Academy of Art on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 3:00 p.m.
