AZUSA, Calif. — Coming into today's doubleheader as one of the top hitting teams in the PacWest and Division II, No. 3-ranked California Baptist University couldn't keep its bats extra hot, settling for a split with Azusa Pacific. The Lancers took the first game 2-0 off a two-run homer from Rachel Meyer, but dropped the nightcap 10-2 to the Cougars.
CBU now sits 17-4 overall and 8-2 in conference, while APU stands 14-5, 5-3 in the PacWest.
Savannah Miller led the Lancers with a 3-for-5 showing on the day at the plate, with a run and a RBI.
CBU scored early in the first game with Miller on first, Meyer blasted a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall to give the Lancers the 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
With Belinda Renne in the circle, the Lancers' defense held the Cougars to eight hits in the first game.
In the nightcap, the Lancers bounced back with runs in the third and fourth after the Cougars scored two in the first. With a double to left field and a steal of third by Marshean August, Miller was able to bring home August with her single up the middle to put the Lancers on the board.
Krista Mann's single up the middle brought in Jacque Lopez and gave the Lancers hope with the score tied 2-2 going into the fifth inning but APU exploded in the bottom of the fifth to score eight runs for the 10-2 run-rule.
The Lancers managed six hits in 21 at bats in the second game but couldn't compete against the Cougars' 13 hits, in their 10 run victory over CBU.
The Lancers return home to face No. 22-ranked Dixie State on Saturday with a noon start time, with the cooperation of the weather. Any updates on game changes can be found at www.cbulancers.com.
