AZUSA, Calif. — Ever since California Baptist University and Azusa Pacific reunited in the PacWest back in 2012, one goal has been the difference maker. The two teams traded off 1-0 victories each year with CBU taking the 1-0 win last year. The Lancers couldn't find the back of the net on the road this year, however, to break the sequence, dropping the 1-0 loss in the last minute of overtime.
CBU falls to 5-6-1 on the year, 5-2 in conference. APU — which is receiving votes in Division II — improves to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the PacWest.
"I think our effort was very good, we were unlucky on the finishing end though," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We got in behind and were able to create some really good chances. Defensively, we limited the vast majority of their shots to 20-plus yards out."
Sara Escobedo was a major factor in keeping the Cougars out of the net for all of regulation. The sophomore made 10 saves on the night, including two big-time saves at the end of regulation to force overtime.
"Sara was fantastic tonight," said St. Clair.
APU put the pressure on early and heavy, but the Lancers created their own dangerous chances. Chaylin Couzens gave CBU its best chance of the first half just minutes before halftime, forcing the Cougar goalkeeper to make a diving save to tip the ball around the far post.
Desarae Felix, Kayla Anderson and Madison Thompson gave the APU defense a handful with their speed, but despite working their way in the attack, the Lancers couldn't capitalize to go into extra time.
Both teams battled, looking for the game-winning golden goal, but just like that, the game was over. APU's Stephanie Lossau ripped a shot Escobedo could do nothing about as it went into the far corner pocket, ending the game 1-0 in favor of the Cougars.
CBU gets some time to recover and rest before its next contest on Oct. 22 as the Lancers host Dixie State.
With just six games left in the regular season, the race for the PacWest Championship is just heating up. The Lancers sit a game behind first now, with Concordia (Calif.) and Point Loma in the top spot with 5-1 conference records.
