RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off a disappointing loss on Tuesday, No. 4-ranked California Baptist University came out looking to get back on track. The Lancers did just that, powering through to a 102-70 victory over Concordia University of Portland, setting a new single-game record in the process.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 7-1 overall, while the Cavaliers fall to 1-4.
A staggering six Lancers finished the night in double figures, led by Gelaun Wheelwright's 20 points (8-for-13). Kalidou Diouf followed with 16 points on perfect 7-for-7 shooting, while Trevone Williams (5-for-8) and Alexander Birketoft (6-for-11) each added 14 points. Michael Smith (5-for-11) and Taj Spencer (5-for-12) rounded out the six hoopsters in double-digit points with 13 each.
The Lancers dominated the glass, out-rebounding CU 65-to-36, with major contributions from Birketoft and Spencer. The sophomore Dane grabbed 13 boards, while Spencer nabbed 11 to help CBU set a new single-game record for rebounds — previously set in 1998 when the Lancers grabbed 59 over Simpson.
Williams hit the first three of the night, initiating a 10-0 Lancer run before CU called a timeout to stop the scoring spree. Diouf and Smith each got in on the scoring action in the run, with Diouf laying in a basket and Smith driving to the net as well.
The Cavaliers tried to keep the margin down, but it wasn't long before CBU took a 20-point lead. After CU hit a three, the Lancers closed the first half on a 12-0 run to hold a 60-34 cushion at the break. Smith laid in the final bucket of the frame after stealing it away from a Cavalier.
CBU kept coming on strong in the second half and threatened a 30-point lead as Wheelwright sank a three to put the Lancers in front 63-34.
CU cut it to 17 points, 67-50, but it was the closest the visitors would be for the remainder of the game.
With 10 minutes to go, Wheelwright laid in a fast break opportunity after Diouf snagged a defensive rebound to put his teammate on the counter attack. He then followed with a layup of his own to fuel the 9-0 run, capped by a Michael Robinson three-pointer.
The Lancers were unstoppable as they quickly built up a 30-point lead off Birketoft driving to the basket and Spencer finishing two shots at the charity stripe.
Danny King hit his two free throws to put CBU even closer to triple digits, 97-67, while Williams' jump shot teetered the Lancers on the edge. Birketoft tipped CBU over the line into triple-digit territory, draining a three as the Lancers walked away with the 102-70 win.
CBU returns to Van Dyne Saturday night, closing the Ayres Hotels Thanksgiving Classic at 7:00 p.m. against New Mexico Highlands.
