Antoun Hits It A Ton

Pitching stood strong for the Lancers in the series, as they helped deliver 12-3 and 2-1 victories to improve CBU to 14-12, 6-2 in the PacWest. Everyone hit for CBU in the first game, as the home team scored eight runs in the first inning to take control early at James W. Totman Stadium. The Sharks fall to 12-9, 9-7 to start out their West Coast swing.
"We won a game with more errors than hits, and we won another game where they more than doubled our hit total," Coach Gary Adcock said of his team's performance in the series. "What I take away from that is maybe we're finding ways to win games instead of finding ways to lose games. That's a tribute to the assistant coaches for keeping the guys positive, and a tribute to the guys for persevering through some adverse times."
Nathan Antoun had the biggest day of any Lancer batter. He went 3-for-6 with three home runs, five runs batted in (including the only two in the finale) and three runs scored on the day.
"It was just a good day, I was seeing the ball well," Antoun said. "I made some adjustments, got some pitches to hit and put some good swings on it."
Andy Crowley went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and run scored in Monday's opener, and also picked up his first save of his career when he left the bases loaded in the final inning of the day with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play grounder.
Adam Hofacket started the first game on the mound for CBU, throwing seven innings in which he allowed seven hits (all singles), no walks, two unearned runs and struck out four. Austen Zimarik got his first start of the season to end the series, going five strong frames that included seven hits, a run and a walk and three strikeouts.
In addition to Crowley, Johnathan Davis and David Herd threw scoreless innings of relief, with Davis' coming in the top of the sixth of the series finale. Herd did not allow a base runner and struck out one batter in his one inning of work in the opener.
"I think we've pitched well the entire season," Adcock said. "Those front three guys we roll out there as starters are as good as anybody. If Davis and Zimarik can give us some help on the backside, I will match those four guys with anyone we face."
It was the Lancers pitching that kept them in the series finale. With the bases loaded and one out, Zimarik found a way to limit the damage in the top of the second inning. He induced a 6-4-3 double play grounder that scored the lead runner but shifted momentum. He then got a ground out to second base to end the frame.
Offensively, CBU quickly got back on top. Tyler Johnson led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle. Antoun had his biggest blast of the night two batters later when he crushed a no-doubter into the netting in left field, giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
"I was just looking for something I could drive," Antoun said. "With a runner on first, I wanted to double or homer and bring him in. It felt good [off the bat], I wasn't sure if it was high enough to get out of here but it carried."
Johnson continued to impress in the starting lineup, going 2-for-5 with a double and RBI on the day. Stephen Lohr, Luke Navigato, Taylor Wetzel and Zack Norris each had multi-hit days. It helped CBU outhit the Sharks, 14-9, in the first game. Antoun was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs in the game, with his first bomb highlighting a dream first inning for the Lancers, as they scored eight runs on seven hits.
Crowley had two hits in the inning, leading things off with a one-out double. HPU got its second out quickly after that, but Lohr was hit by a pitch to keep the inning going. Wetzel followed with an RBI single up the middle, and Johnson drove in Lohr with a double into left field. Navigato scored Wetzel and Johnson with a double into left center.
Antoun's bomb cleared the bases, with Jake Gallaway putting another runner on. Norris kept things going with a double into the left-center gap, and Crowley plated him with a single through the right side, giving the Lancers an 8-0 advantage.
Norris led off the bottom of the fourth with a double into right field and moved to third on a Crowley sacrifice bunt. Antonio Chavarria scored Norris with a grounder to short to give CBU a 9-2 lead.
Antoun bashed his second homer with a one-out solo shot to left in the bottom of the eighth, and Chavarria drove in Gallaway (single) and Norris (hit by pitch) with a two-out double into right center to finish the scoring for CBU.
"Nate's the epitome of perseverance, just sticking with it and grinding," Adcock said. "You're talking about an all-conference performer that was struggling but able to stay focused, upbeat, positive to work his way through some adversity and show some leadership in his senior year. I am excited and proud of him."
There is no rest for the Lancers, as they will turn around for a four-game series with Fresno Pacific in Totman Stadium. The Sunbirds and CBU face off Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. with the series ending with a Saturday doubleheader slated for a 12 p.m. start. It will be the Lancers' eighth game in seven days.
"Playing eight games in seven days is always a challenge, when you add a caliber of opponent with Hawaii Pacific and Fresno Pacific it adds to that 10-fold," Adcock said. "[FPU] Coach [Oscar] Hirschkorn and his staff always bring in a quality team that's formidable offensively, they play efficient defense and they always pitch it. We do play well at home and we're going to do our best to defend our home turf."
