RIVERSIDE, Calif.---- After four straight wins, California Baptist University battled on defense in its first Golden Coast Conference game of the season on Saturday against No. 12 San Diego State. The Lancers couldn't follow through to secure the win, falling to the Aztecs in a tightly-contested 11-9 loss.
Meghan Rowland anchored the defense with 15 saves in the cage for CBU. Offensively, the Lancers gave SDSU all it could handle, thanks to goal scorers Hannah Evans, Valerie Spezzaferri, Paizlee Dreyer, Mallory Montano and Raine Paul. CBU fell to 7-8, 0-1 in conference. Despite the loss, the Lancers impressed their home crowd to pull back within a goal in the fourth quarter after trailing by four early.
"I thought we showed a lot of toughness coming back from down 6-2 to put ourselves in position to take the lead in the fourth quarter," Coach Jonathan Miller said.
For the first two-and-a-half minutes both the Lancers and the Aztecs traded goals. Evans scored first, but an Aztec goal came within 39 seconds. Spezzaferri scored shorty to help the Lancers lead 2-1, but the home team found itself down 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
With a minute-and-a-half remaining in the second quarter, Evans scored her second goal of the game but it wasn't enough and the Aztecs carried a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Spezzaferri added her second goal on an ejection to help the Lancers pull within 7-4. The Aztecs built their advantage back up to 8-4, but CBU put together its finest stretch with a three-goal run fueled by two Dreyer tallies and Evans completing her hat trick to end the third quarter within one, 8-7, of SDSU.
Within the first 15 seconds of the final quarter, the Aztecs cashed in a penalty shot. Montano kept CBU within a goal for a moment, but San Diego State scored back-to-back goals to build an insurmountable lead. Paul scored the last goal of the contest for the Lancers to bring the score to 11-9.
The Lancers are back in action on Tuesday, March 10th at 3:00 p.m. against Bucknell.
