Conference Race Heats Up

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- What was a lopsided race for the PacWest championship shifted dramatically over the last two days. It is all thanks to California Baptist University's ability to produce big innings on the offensive end and hold back a dangerous Dixie State squad with its pitching this week.
The balance of the Lancers led to them taking three of four off Dixie State, the ninth-ranked team in NCAA Division II and top-ranked West Region squad according to the NCBWA, at Bruce Hurst Field in this week. CBU capped the series victory with an 8-2 win Saturday afternoon.
Heading back home to face PacWest rival Azusa Pacific next week, the Lancers improved to 23-15, 15-5 in conference. After seeing its 13-game winning streak come to a close the day before, Dixie State moves to 25-11, 20-4. The Red Storm narrowly lead the conference race, with Point Loma sitting with the same amount of conference losses at 30-7, 16-4. The Lancers currently occupy third place in the standings, leading fourth-place Azusa Pacific (24-12, 14-8) by three games.
Like in the previous game, CBU used a monster frame to take control Saturday. The Lancers had trailed 2-0 since the first inning and then exploded for seven runs on four hits and four errors in the fifth to grab a 7-2 lead. Antonio Chavarria (2-for-4), Nathan Antoun (2-for-4, two doubles, two runs), Andy Crowley (2-for-5) and Jake Gallaway (2-for-5, two RBIs, two stolen bases) each had multi-hit games for CBU.
Taylor Wetzel sparked the fifth-inning rally with a leadoff, pinch-hit double. A walk to Steven Pena and single from Crowley loaded the bases, while a fielding error and RBI single into left field from A.J. David tied things at 2-2.
Consecutive errors gave the Lancers two more runs and a bunt single from Gallaway built on the advantage even more. The damage came to a close for Dixie State after a well-executed double-steal. Gallaway stole second, which gave Brian Ruhm the opportunity to swipe home to give CBU a 7-2 cushion.
Antoun led off the seventh inning with his second double of the game. A sacrifice bunt from Ruhm moved him to third, which led to another run on the Red Storm's fifth error of the game.
CBU staffed the game on the mound, with six different pitchers taking the ball. The final five pitchers: Brody Robinson, Patrick Gonzales, Stephen Carajabal, David Herd and Crowley did not allow a run in their appearances. Carajabal went the longest, throwing 4.1 innings, striking out six and allowing just five base runners. Herd and Crowley combined to close out the game in the bottom of the ninth.
